The Complete Guide to Luxury Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Mountain gorillas live only in the volcanic highlands shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They cannot survive in captivity, so the only way to see them is in the wild.

Each habituated family receives a single small group of visitors per day, for one hour. That strict limit is what makes the encounter so intimate, and it protects the gorillas from stress and disease.

Rwanda's gorilla permit is deliberately priced at a premium — at the time of writing, 1,500 US dollars per person for a single trek. Permit prices are set by the Rwanda Development Board and can change, so we always confirm the current rate when booking.

The permit funds anti-poaching patrols, veterinary care and community projects around the park, and a share goes directly to neighbouring villages. It is one reason mountain gorilla numbers have been rising.

Permits sell out months ahead in peak season. We recommend securing them as soon as your dates are fixed.

Your day starts with a briefing at the park headquarters, where rangers assign groups based on fitness. You then drive to the trailhead and walk through farmland into bamboo and forest.

Treks can take anywhere from under an hour to several hours each way, depending on where the family has moved. Once you reach them, you will spend a full hour watching them feed, play and rest.

Porters can be hired at the trailhead to carry your bag and help on steep sections — we highly recommend it, as it also supports the local community.

You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking uphill for a few hours at altitude of around 2,500 to 3,000 metres, on terrain that can be muddy and steep.

Regular walking in the weeks before, good waterproof boots, gloves for nettles and a walking stick make a noticeable difference. The minimum age for trekking is 15.

Rwanda is compact and easy to combine. Kigali has direct flights to Nairobi, putting the Maasai Mara within reach the same day, and connections onward to Zanzibar for a beach finale.

Our favourite sequence is two or three nights in the Rwandan highlands, four nights on safari in Kenya, then four to five nights on the Zanzibar coast.
