Is Rwanda Worth the Cost? A Luxury Traveler's Perspective

Each permit grants one hour with a habituated gorilla family, in a group of no more than eight visitors, accompanied by trackers and rangers. The permit fee is set by the Rwanda Development Board — last published at US$1,500 per person — and a share directly supports conservation and local communities.

Permits are limited each day and should be secured early, particularly for the drier months.

Around Volcanoes National Park, lodges such as Singita Kwitonda, Bisate and One&Only Gorilla's Nest set the standard for design, service and conservation commitment. Beyond the volcanoes, Nyungwe and Akagera offer their own exceptional stays.
