How to Choose the Right Safari Lodge
The lodge you choose decides what you see, how you see it and how you feel at the end of each day.
With hundreds of beautiful properties across East and Southern Africa, knowing how to choose a safari lodge can feel overwhelming. The photographs all look wonderful. The differences lie elsewhere.
Location Before Luxury
The most important feature of any lodge is where it sits — and where the wildlife is at the time of your visit. A spectacular lodge in the wrong area for the season will always disappoint compared with a simpler camp in the right one.
Conservancy vs National Reserve
National parks and reserves are open to all licensed vehicles, which can mean crowded sightings in peak season. Private conservancies limit the number of vehicles and guests, and typically permit walking, night drives and off-road driving.
Where possible, we favour conservancies — or a combination of both.
Guiding and Vehicle Policy
Ask how many guests share a vehicle, whether private vehicles are available, and how experienced the guides are. Guiding shapes the safari more than any other factor.
Camp or Lodge?
Tented camps offer intimacy with the bush — canvas walls, the sound of lions at night — often with every comfort of a hotel. Lodges are built of stone or timber and offer more space and solidity, sometimes with spas and pools. Neither is better; they simply feel different.
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Where is the wildlife during my travel dates?
- Is the lodge in a conservancy or a national reserve?
- How many guests per vehicle, and is private guiding available?
- Are walking safaris and night drives permitted?
- Is the lodge suitable for children, if travelling as a family?
- How does the lodge support conservation and local communities?
