The Ultimate East Africa Luxury Itinerary

Savannah, rainforest and Indian Ocean — the great East African journey, paced for pleasure.

The Ultimate East Africa Luxury Itinerary

East Africa rewards those who combine its contrasts: the open plains of Kenya and Tanzania, the misty forests of Rwanda, and the warm, slow coast of Zanzibar.

This is our signature East Africa luxury itinerary — roughly sixteen nights — designed so that each stage builds on the last rather than competing with it.

Arrival in Nairobi

Nights 1–2. Arrive into Nairobi and rest at a garden hotel on the city's quiet edge. Spend a morning at the elephant orphanage and an afternoon with a private guide in Karen before your first bush flight.

Starting slowly matters: long-haul fatigue and an early game drive are not a good combination.

The Masai Mara

Nights 3–6. Fly to a private conservancy bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve. Four nights allow for dawn drives, walking safaris with Maasai guides, a hot-air balloon flight and, between July and October, the chance to witness river crossings of the Great Migration.

Conservancy camps keep vehicle numbers low, so sightings feel personal rather than crowded.

Gorillas in Rwanda

Nights 7–9. Fly via Nairobi to Kigali and drive to Volcanoes National Park. Three nights give room for one gorilla trek, a golden monkey or Dian Fossey hike, and a rest day to absorb what is often described as the most moving wildlife encounter on earth.

Permits are limited and should be secured as early as possible.

The Serengeti

Nights 10–13. Continue to northern Tanzania for four nights in the Serengeti, positioned according to the season: the south for calving from roughly January to March, the north for river crossings later in the year.

The scale here is different from the Mara — vast, quiet and endlessly horizon-wide.

Barefoot Days in Zanzibar

Nights 14–16. A short flight to the Indian Ocean. Choose a private villa on the east coast or an island retreat off Mnemba, with a night in Stone Town if history appeals.

Sail a dhow at sunset, snorkel the reefs, and let the safari settle into memory.

How Long You Really Need

Sixteen nights is ideal for all four regions. With ten to twelve nights, we would suggest choosing either Kenya or Tanzania for the safari, plus Rwanda or Zanzibar — not all four.

The aim is never to see the most; it is to feel each place fully.

  • 10 nights: Kenya + Zanzibar
  • 12 nights: Kenya + Rwanda + beach
  • 16 nights: Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zanzibar
